Extended Auto Warranty Needs Differ by Driver and Car

An extended auto warranty can give you piece of mind as your car gets older, but a common question is, how much additional coverage should I be looking for? The answer will depend primarily on three factors: the model of car you drive, how you drive it, and how long you want to keep it around.

Certain makes, models and years of vehicles will have different problems. While it might be easier to simply think of a certain type of car having a usual type of problem, that is not regularly the case. The wide variety of styles that an automaker offers usually means that the lines that are used to build them are completely separate, so any issues on one production line would not impact another.

Another thing to consider is the year. A car build one year might have certain issues that, once they become known, are fixed for the next year’s model. If your car is usually stable but sometimes exhibits transmission issues, you might be able to consider a cheaper powertrain-only coverage plan, rather than a more comprehensive – and expensive – bumper to bumper plan.

How you drive your car will also have an impact on what type of extended auto warranty you should get. A car that is driven often, but usually for short distances can get a plan that offers a long period of coverage, even with a restrictive amount of miles. In comparison, someone who drives long distances might find that a similar warranty expires long before they would like it to, due to the “whichever comes first” policy on mileage and years for coverage. Know what your driving style is going in, and choose a plan that will fit your requirements. Finding out later and trying to fit your driving into someone else’s mileage requirements will be a big hassle.

Don’t forget to consider how long you plan on keeping this car. An extended auto warranty is a wasted expense if you plan on trading in or selling your car within a year or two, unless you get a program that can be transferred to the new owner – that can actually be a selling point. Again, research is the key, and knowing what your future plans for the car are. Don’t buy something you will never use, or skimp on something you will require later.

The graphics and packaging of these releases may be somewhat suspect, but the music certainly isn’t, and tracks like “It’s Too Late,” “If You Need Me,” “Down to My Last Heartbreak,” and the hard-charging “Baby Call on Me” are fine examples of early soul, and if these sides lack the electric power and punch of the Atlantic/Stax material that followed a couple of years later, it’s only by a matter of degree. All You Need Is Now $27.19 Duran Duran and producer Mark Ronson envisioned the 2011 release All You Need Is Now as a sequel to the band’s 1982 effort Rio, but fans are better off approaching it as the imaginary effort that came after 1983’s Seven and the Ragged Tiger. Follow their analogy, and this should sound like a band that just created a new wave icon, but here there’s an enthusiasm and sense of purpose that can only come from an act less cocksure than one that is on top. To his credit, Ronson was pretty near the top at the time of the album’s release, but his inspired work on All You Need is driven by both hero worship and a previously underappreciated talent to do what’s right by the artist. For Duran Duran, it’s clean and slick landscapes of synths, plus a dash of trendy gimmicks (representing the band’s love of fame and fashion) with just a touch of weird (representing the band’s love of art rock, particularly Roxy Music). The band is close enough to top form to use Ronson’s work as a springboard, letting the singalong tales of models, paranoia, and men who steal leopards flow naturally. Some tracks sway and glide, like the new romantic hit “Planet Earth” (the great “Too Bad You’re So Beautiful,” or the sci-fi club track “Blame the Machines”), while others bring reminders of the percussive studio creation “Wild Boys” (the pounding title track), or those early, melancholy numbers like “The Chauffer” (the flowing and wistful “Mediterranea”). As far as reservations, the once bold, sometimes shameless Simon Le Bon sounds a bit tentative in this post-Killers world, and when compared to the tight, original, nine-track version of the album previously made available via digital download, this final, fatter version borders on “too much of a good thing.” Fortunately, the emphasis will be on “good thing” for longtime Duran fans or anyone with a taste for melodic, synth-driven pop/rock. ~ David Jeffries, Rovi

Need You Now [UK] $13.59 Lady Antebellum prefaced the release of Need You Now by issuing its title track as a single; it reached the top spot on the country charts and stayed there for five straight weeks. It was their second number one, and they wasted no time following it with “American Honey,” which appeared a mere two months before this set was in stores. This singing/songwriting trio — lead vocalists Charles Kelly and Hillary Scott, with multi-instrumentalist and backing vocalist Dave Haywood — understand how Nashville works, and they know how to work it. On their sophomore effort, they stick very close to the formula of their debut: a slew of mid- and uptempo love songs, a sad ballad, and a couple of rocked-up good-time tunes, all self-written with some help from some of Nashville’s most respected writers. Kelly’s baritone is emotive, expressive, and deep in the pocket, no matter what he’s singing. He shines on the soft rocking “Love This Pain,” which could have been a single. Scott’s voice is a little less distinctive, but she does possess a unique form of phrasing and reaches deeply into her protagonist’s personal situations, whether it’s the celebratory good-time girl in “American Honey” or the wildly-in-love mature woman on “Hold on Tight.” The group party anthem on the set — an obligatory addition these days — is “Stars Tonight,” which contains more than a few clichés, but has a killer guitar riff and an infectious chorus. With co-production from Paul Worley, Lady Antebellum prove there is no sophomore slump on Need You Now. Here, the band’s seamless, polished, and savvy brand of contemporary country is even more consistent than it was on their debut; it’s virtually flawless in its songwriting, production, and performance. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi

Whenever You Need Somebody $6.38 In the ’80s and ’90s, England’s dance music team Stock, Aitken & Waterman was often accused of being too slick for its own good, and favoring style over substance. But the producers/songwriters (also known for their work with Dead or Alive and Samantha Fox) should definitely be proud of their work on fellow Briton Rick Astley’s often captivating debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody. While the high-tech production is very ’80s, Astley’s soul/pop/dance music approach is very much a production of the ’70s — sort of the Average White Band meets Philly soul/disco meets Tom Jones.
